Wood Shop Recycling

In the YSI Woodshop, we strive to recycle as much of the wood waste as possible. We do this in several ways:

We sell the cut ends of our lumber for scrap wood. People use this for heating their homes in the winter and for camping in the summer. At $20 per pickup truck load, it is quite a bargain.

Wood that cannot be sold from the scrap pile, as well as old pallets, are sent through the shredder. The shredder separates the nails from the wood during the shredding process.

Smaller pieces of wood get mixed in with the separated nails in the shredder nail bin. Our employees then separate the nails from the smaller pieces of wood.

The nails are taken to a scrap metal shop, where they are recycled.

Sawdust and shredded wood chips are collected by a vacuum system.

The sawdust and chips are then taken to a paper mill.

Art from Wood Knots

Even the knots in the wood are collected. There is a very talented production worker at YSI who turns the wood knots into art pieces.
