eople with developmental disabilities face multiple barriers in their lives which individuals who are not disabled may find it difficult to understand. One of the most significant challenges is how to become more involved and active in the community in which they live. Volunteering at a local animal shelter, attending an arts and crafts class at a local community center, or participating in a water aerobics class at their area pool may all seem like simple activities easily accessible to most but may present problems to someone with a disability.

As an organization that serves those with disabilities, we recognize the need to help support those with disabilities achieve their goal of integrating in to the community. With the Community Access Program, the Supported Employment department at Yakima Specialties can now provide that one on one assistance. Not only does this help those participating in the program gain social acceptance and positive interactions, but also helps area non-profits meet their needs for volunteers.
